I tried doing a search & replace across multiple word files using this procedure

It did not work.

Hi jon@jonpeddie.com,
I just tried the feature Batch Find and Replace from Kutools, it worked well. So, could you tell what is wrong with it in detail? If possible, can you attach a file for us to test? If not, can you attach some screenshots?
